Essential Hair Care Tips and Advice for Wigs

There are two types of wigs available in the market: Synthetic and Human hair. Human hair is created using, as the name suggests from natural human hair. It means that this wig feels and acts as natural hair.

Compared to synthetic, natural human hair costs much higher and hence requires special maintenance to keep it intact for an extended period. Another essential thing to keep in mind is that not all of them are created equal. They come at different prices depending on the creator and hair used. No matter what style you have, you have to care for them like your own hair. They are indeed made using human hair, but there is not any source to moisturize them. Hence, using a harsh detergent can baldy affect the hair. In this article, we will share some hair care tips for wigs, which are as follows:

Before Washing

Just like natural hair, you also need to wash the wig. Before washing, it is essential to comb it using a wide-tooth comb gently. We recommend you start cleaning from the tip and then work your way to the base of the cap.

Washing Human Hair Wig

To wash the wig, you should first wet it under a shower or tap. Many people wash them in a basin or sink, which is not recommended to tangle the hair. It is also essential to use a sulfate-free shampoo or conditioner on the wig. While you apply the shampoo, gently lather in your hands. Do not try to rub or massage as it can break or tangle the hair. After applying the shampoo, gently clean it with running water. Keep in mind not to use hot water as it can damage the hair.

After successfully rinsing the shampoo out, squeeze out any excess water. You have to be careful while rubbing the hair. To dry the wig, use a clean towel to soak any excess water.

Conditioning Your Wig

After carefully washing the hair, it is time to use a conditioner. Take a small amount while your wig is still wet, apply to your hands, and gently work into the hair. You need to make sure that it is spread evenly. During the process, you need to make sure not to apply on the base. The reason is it can loosen the knots on the cap. Otherwise, you will end up losing some hair.

You also need to leave the conditioner for about 3-5 minutes. After that, use your fingers or a wide-tooth comb to detangle the wig. Start from the tips and work your way up to the cap. Make sure not to stretch the hair as it could damage the hair. After that, use cold running water to rinse the conditioner from it.

Drying Hair

Whether you have the best lace front wigs or a simple one, drying using a hairdryer. The reason is that heat can damage the hair. Squeeze excess water and then blot hair with a towel. You can also apply some good-quality oil to add moisture, shine, and protection. There are many oils available on the market specially made for human hair wigs. We will not recommend you to use regular oil.

Styling the Wig

We will recommend you leave your wig on the stand to dry. It is the recommended method to preserve the integrity of the natural fibers. Once the wig is dry, you can use styling tools like flat irons, hairdryers, or curling irons. There are products specifically made for human hair wigs. They come with adjustable temperatures to keep your wig neat. If you want to prolong the lifespan, then use high-quality styling products.

Get Your Wig Ready in Advance

Human hair wigs for black women usually have curly hairstyles. No matter what kind of wig you have, you should keep it ready in advance. Instead of making it ready before you go out can take a lot of time. We always recommend having two wigs ready every time. Because it makes things easier and avoids any mishandling. For example, you have to get ready for an occasion, and you are in a hurry. You will do everything so fast that you may end up running the hair. In another case, you may need another hairstyle for the occasion. So, if you have two wigs, then you will have an extra ready to wear. In short words, you will be ready for any situation.

Post Styling and Wig Care

  • It is better to keep the wig away from sunlight as the heat from it can damage the natural fiber. Another reason is that it can fade the color of the hair, so it is better to keep it away from direct sunlight.
  • When you are going to bed, remove the wig to avoid hair loss.
  • Never left your wig anywhere; instead, keep it on a mannequin head or a stand smaller than the base. If you put it on a bigger stand, then it will stretch the cap.
  • Never wash your wig with chlorinated or hot water. Because it can affect the texture and color of the wig.
  • You need to be extra careful while washing or storing lighter hair colors.


Human hair wigs cost a lot of money and hence require special care. People buy them to have a natural look. So, it is important to keep it gorgeous for an extended period. Improper handling can ruin the integrity of the hair. You also need to know which kind of shampoo and conditioner is best for human hair wigs. Natural hair has a source for moisture, but it doesn’t. So, you have to keep this in mind.
